Nel 1977 gli show di Halloween di Frank Zappa erano già leggenda. Iniziarono alla fine degli anni ’60 e nel 1972 diventarono un appuntamento annuale, prima a Passaic e Chicago e poi a New York dal 1974: lì l’incontro tra Zappa e il pubblico newyorkese diede origine ad una combinazione perfetta. Dal 28 al 31 ottobre 1977 Zappa e la sua band si esibirono in sei storici show in un Palladium esaurito. Tutte le performance vennero registrate e quattro filmate e riassunte nel film diretto dallo stesso Zappa “Baby Snakes”.

Dopo la notizia del ritorno in tour di Frank Zappa, la Zappa Family Trust e Universal sono lieti di annunciare che i leggendari show di Halloween 1977 saranno per la prima volta disponibili interamente il prossimo 20 ottobre in occasione del 40° anniversario in due versioni: HALLOWEEN 77 (COSTUME BOXSET) e HALLOWEEN NIGHT (3CD).

Il box set LTD Edition Halloween 77 include:

• Tutte le tracce dei concerti, 158 brani (mixati nel 2016 dai master originali) contenuti in una “Zappa’s Oh Punky” USB key a forma di caramella con audio in 24-bit.

• Booklet digitale di 28 pagine con foto inedite, note a cura del Vaultmeister degli archivi zappiani Joe Travers, co-produttore del cofanetto insieme al figlio di Frank Ahmet Zappa, e contributi di personaggi come il chitarrista Adrian Belew, il percussionista Ed Mann, il keyboard tech Thomas Nordegg, il tour manager Phil Kaufman e la superfan Janet “The Planet” Walley.

• Nel perfetto spirito zappiano, il box set include anche un costume ed una maschera per travestirsi come Zappa e festeggiare il periodo dell’anno preferito da Frank!

Oltre al box set, sarà anche pubblicato un triplo CD con la registrazione dell’intero show dell’Halloween Night più altri brani selezionati dal concerto del 30 Ottobre.

Originariamente i concerti dovevano essere quattro, dal 28 al 31 Ottobre; Zappa aggiunse poi altri due show per la grandissima richiesta del pubblico, per un totale di sei concerti in quattro giorni. Le registrazioni sono presentate senza sovra-incisioni e l’audio è stato remixato dai nastri multi-traccia da Joe Travers.

La line-up comprendeva Terry Bozzio (batteria), Tommy Mars e Peter Wolf (tastiere), Adrian Belew (chitarra e voce), Ed Mann (percussioni) e Patrick O’Hearn (basso); nei sei concerti la band suonò mediamente 25 canzoni per show con continue improvvisazioni e un’assidua partecipazione del pubblico rendendo gli eventi qualcosa di unico.

Le canzoni spaziano nell’immenso repertorio zappiano con brani scelti da album come Hot Rats, Over-Nite Sensation, Bongo Fury, One Size Fits All, Zoot Allures… Molte composizioni erano inoltre inedite e saranno pubblicate solo successivamente nell’album Sheik Yerbouti (1979), tra queste “Flakes”, “Broken Hearts Are For Assholes”, “Jones Crusher”, “Bobby Brown Goes Down”, “City Of Tiny Lites”, “Tryin’ To Grow A Chin” e “Wild Love”. Altri brani che vengono eseguiti per la prima volta, “Dancin’ Fool”, “Jewish Princess”, una versione strumentale di “Conehead” poi apparsa su You Are What You Is (1981) e “Läther”.
